It might be the best of the three - on tape.

I agree that the '81 China>Riders ROCK! I'm a devotee of 9/12/81.

After fifty or so Bay Area/west of the Mississippi shows, those fall '83 shows were my introduction to East Coast Dead and I had not experienced a Hartford like atmosphere at a show before this - The Land of the Iron Sausage - to borrow a term from Frank. Cops cracking skulls, people crashing gates, fuck-yeah hard rockin man! It was a whole new world at the time. I lived back there from Fall '83 until the Summer of '90, so I got used to it, came to love it! Aggressive energy Dead! Fuck yeah man!

The Garden was another universe all together, there in the middle of the pulsating beast like that. That, in my opinion, was the Grateful Dead in all their glory, regardless of how, when or what. Stuff you won't find anywhere on tape...and F'n great pizza after the show!

I saw the first Box of Rain in '86, and similarly, the first one blew a hole in the sky, those that followed may have become more polished, but they didn't strum the cosmic harp in that same way.

5/13->5/15 changed the entire direction of my life. Picked me up and moved me from the Bay area to NY. Like a time machine it was, or a transporter from Star Trek. Beam me up Jerry. Woke up one day and found myself 3000 miles from home, at a dead show in the bowel of the beast - is that St Stephen I hear? much fun!

So Many Roads.

a caveat that could be said on almost all of the breakouts is that the energy and joy of the breakout trumps the actual performance, better versions are found as these tunes gain some footing...China Cat from 12-29-77 perfect example, not that great of a version, but the "breakout" energy is awesome...03-19-86 Box of Rain same deal...
